In order to attract my demographics I used a series of forms and conventions which they we’re used to / would be attracted to, in order to attract their attention. After observing my case study and seeing the forms and techniques in which they use to address an older audience, I began to adapt these forms and techniques into my own production to a produce professional product.
Firstly, picking the right colour scheme for my magazine was difficult as my colour scheme had a big influence of my brand image, as costumers will associate a certain colour and logo with my brand that’s why obtaining the prefect brand image is very important to companies. Starting with my masthead design, I first looked at the psychology of colours in which people are attracted to, so I could get a better understanding of the implications and associating in which is portrayed with particular colours, therefore allowing me to manipulate certain ideologies of that colour onto my brand image. From my research I found that younger demographics tend to opt for bright, bold colours which can grab their attention quickly. Whereas older demographics tend to go for dimmer, darker colours which are gentler on the eyes hence why a lot of magazines aimed at older demographics tend to have fewer colours and less bright colours. For my masthead design I used the colours red and white, the reason for that due to the connotations associated with the colours, red is seen as a balanced colour and is generally liked by a high percentage of males. This gives a high possibility of attracting my demographic that will be predominantly female; however the use of the colours ensures a higher possibility of a men purchasing my magazine than women. Looking at my case study Q who uses the house colours Red and White which is generally favoured by men is quite reflective of their demographic.
Another way in which I address my demographic was through the use of language. After reading and comparing two music magazine articles aimed at different age, social bracket, etc. I began to have a clearer understanding on how to address my demographics through the use of language. When reading the article aimed at the younger demographics I notice informal socialite and foal language, I became aware of how music magazine use different socialite to relate and communicate effectively and reflectively to their demographic. There were also common references which a younger demographics would be interested in or be able to relate to such as reference to festivals, branded clothing est. Whereas the article aimed at the older demographic used slightly varies in their socialite, using a vast range of language which were formal but also using a little foreign language which may be familiar to an older audience who have more likely travelled more around the world learning different foreign saying and words est. After seeing how an article targeted at an older demographic uses formal and foreign language but also unlike the article aimed at the younger demographics, the older aged article does not focus on aspects such as clothing and branding but on primarily on the music and musicians. This distinctive but subtle variations allowed me to see how I could attract and appeal to my demographics more by seeing the standards in which they expect by learning and using these simple but yet effective techniques I allow my magazine to portray professionalism by addressing specific features expected by my demographics.
An additional way in which I address my demographics was by using the feedback and results I received in my questionnaires. The contents page of my magazine includes features such as festival listings, gigs and club reviews and schedules, I have also included names, interviews, and features of popular artist which will be known by my demographic. The reason for this is to attract my demographics as 55% of participants who completed my questionnaire said that they are more likely to buy a magazine if they see a mention or feature of an artist or band they recognise or like. Thus the reason for using Madonna as my cover image, as when I was conducting my audience profile I estimated my demographics’ medium age to be 26, consequently showing that my demographics would have been listening to music of the 80/90 which Madonna would have been popular as during those times in which my demographics would have grown up listening to Madonna. I also added an editor’s page to my magazine in order to give my magazine a personal connection between the magazine and the readers.
